Question 1

Do I need to speak Japanese to get around Tokyo?

Accepted Answer

No, while speaking some Japanese phrases is appreciated, it's not strictly necessary to navigate Tokyo. Major train stations, tourist attractions, and larger hotels often have English signage and staff. Google Maps and translation apps are incredibly helpful. Many restaurants have English menus or picture menus. Politeness and patience go a long way, even with language barriers, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for English speakers.

Question 2

What is the best way to get from Narita Airport (NRT) to central Tokyo?

Accepted Answer

The most convenient ways are the Narita Express (N'EX) train, which takes approximately 60-90 minutes to major stations like Tokyo, Shinjuku, or Shibuya, or the Keisei Skyliner, which is faster to Ueno/Nippori. Airport limousine buses are also available and can drop you directly at many hotels. Tickets can be purchased at the airport upon arrival, with N'EX offering a discounted round-trip ticket for foreign visitors.

Question 3

Is Tokyo expensive for tourists?

Accepted Answer

Tokyo can be as expensive or as affordable as you make it. Accommodation is often the biggest expense. However, dining can be very budget-friendly, with delicious ramen, udon, and bento boxes available at reasonable prices. Public transport is efficient and economical. Many attractions, like the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observation decks, are free. Strategic planning can help manage costs without compromising the experience.

Question 4

What should I do if I get lost in Tokyo?

Accepted Answer

If you get lost, remain calm. Tokyo's public transport system is well-signed in English. Use Google Maps, which is highly accurate and provides excellent navigation for trains and walking. If you need to ask for directions, look for a 'Koban' (police box) or approach younger people, who are more likely to speak English. Most Japanese people are very polite and will try their best to assist you, even if there's a language barrier.

Question 5

What are some essential Japanese etiquette rules to know?

Accepted Answer

Punctuality is highly valued. Bowing is a common greeting and sign of respect; a slight nod suffices for tourists. Always remove your shoes before entering homes, traditional restaurants, and some temples/museums. Avoid talking loudly on public transport or while eating. Tipping is not customary and can be seen as offensive. Always use both hands when exchanging business cards or money, showing respect and thoughtfulness.

Question 6

Can I use my credit card everywhere in Tokyo?

Accepted Answer

While major hotels, department stores, and large restaurants widely accept credit cards, smaller shops, local eateries, and traditional establishments (like some izakayas or small ramen shops) often prefer or only accept cash. It's always advisable to carry a reasonable amount of Japanese Yen for smaller purchases, street food, and places outside the main tourist hubs, ensuring a smoother experience throughout your trip.
