Thailand

The Land of Smiles, on its own terms

Thailand blends golden temples, jungle mountains and island beaches with one of Southeast Asia's most confident, easygoing cultures. Never colonised, it has always cooked, dressed and worshipped its own way.

Myths

What's true, what isn't

Actually true

  • It was never colonised by a European power

Thailand (formerly Siam) is the only Southeast Asian nation never colonised, a point of deep national pride.

  • Street food is genuinely world class

Bangkok's street vendors have earned Michelin recognition; pad kra pao and boat noodles rival any restaurant dish.

  • The monarchy is deeply revered

Portraits of the royal family are everywhere, and criticism of the monarchy is both socially taboo and legally restricted.

  • Buddhism shapes daily rhythm

Saffron-robed monks collecting alms at dawn are a normal part of the morning in cities and villages alike.

Commonly believed, wrong

  • "It's all beach parties and full moon raves"

Most of the country is rural, agricultural and quietly traditional — the party islands are a small, specific slice.

  • "Thai food is always fiery hot"

Many regional dishes are mild and herbal; heat levels vary enormously between Isaan, southern and central Thai cooking.

  • "Bangkok is chaotic with no order"

Beneath the traffic and street stalls is a highly structured society with elaborate social hierarchy and etiquette.

  • "Elephant riding is a traditional cultural activity"

Ethical tourism has shifted heavily toward elephant sanctuaries focused on observation and rehabilitation, not riding.
