Still the benchmark city break. The post-Olympic upgrades to the riverfront and the reopened Notre-Dame have made the centre better than it was a decade ago.
London, United Kingdom
Free world-class museums, theatre among the strongest anywhere and a restaurant scene that finally justifies the prices. Book the big shows before you fly.
Tokyo, Japan
The weak yen has kept Japan at the top of everyone's list for three years running. Expect queues at the famous things; the pleasure is in the ordinary neighbourhoods.

When to go
The single biggest upgrade to any 2026 trip is moving it out of July and August. Southern Europe and Türkiye are at their best in late April to early June and again from mid-September to late October: warm water, half the crowds, and hotel rates that are often 30–40% lower.
For Japan, aim at late March for blossom or November for the maples, and book accommodation four to six months out. For Latin America, the shoulder months either side of the rainy season are reliably the sweet spot.
